Depression is a common problem for many people which not only affects them but also their family and friends as they attempt to deal with the condition.
Often people are treated with depression by drugs which they then need to continue throughout their life, but now an Israeli company is offering a way to treat the condition as well as other ones related to the brain without the need of drugs.
Jerusalem-based Brainsway offers Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) to treat the brain and activate it without anesthesia. The method is non-invasive by sending out pulses to the brain.
This compares with Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) which is an invasive procedure using anesthesia and in which many people get side affects including headaches and memory problems.
Using special magnates, TMS stimulates the brain via regular pulses and initially Brainsway aims for the product to be used for the treatment of mood disorders as well as addictions including smoking.
"Depression is only the first step for Brainsway," Brainsway chief executive Uzi Sofer told Israel21c. "We hope to develop many new applications for Alzheimer's, PTSD, and addiction. We want to specialize in R&D, and hope to find strategic partners that can do the other work of marketing and sales."
