A grapefruit a day could well keep the doctor away according to a new study undertaken by Hebrew University School of Pharmacy.
In the grapefruit study, 57 patients at Kaplan Hospital in Rehovot, Israel were monitored. Those who ate a grapefruit a day were able reduce the levels of cholesterol in their blood compared to patients who did not eat the fruit.
By reducing the cholesterol people can also reduce the risk of getting heart disease.
When it came to the type of grapefruit, the researchers found red grapefruit is more effective than other types of grapefruit. But overall, all types of grapefruit are helpful due to the antioxidants contained within them.
A further study into the properties of the red grapefruit is also set to be undertaken to try and understand better how it works.
When it comes to eating grapefruit, both the fresh fruit and the juice are equally beneficial when consumed.
Researchers have also advised that those on medication should speak to their doctor first as grapefruit can react with medicine.
