Seaweed-based meals used in sushi are both tasty as well as very healthy and now Noritech, an Israeli company is developing seaweed products that can be produced in on-land ponds instead of just the ocean.
Officially known as porphyra but commonly known as "nori", this seaweed is used in all manner of sushi related products including rolls and is generally only grown in and around the Asian sea. Tests have shown that regular eating of porphyra keeps cholesterol down and provides various benefits to improving health.
In the wild, the quality of porphyra can vary with its nutritional benefits but Yokneam-based Noritech has been growing it out of its natural environment and can make it standardised.
"Until today, the Nori has been cultivated in the open sea near Japan, China and Korea. You never knew what quantity or quality the Nori would yield. It all depended on the sea," Alex Harel, CEO of NoriTech told Israel21c. "We came up with a way to grow Nori sheets that will guarantee a high amount of its nutritional elements."
As well as eating and health needs, the company has been looking for partners to use porphyra for cosmetic purposes.
