Elderberry

A natural way to combat flu that is made with elderberry extract is also looking likely that it an be used to combat Avian Flu.

Developed in Israel by Algerian-born Dr Madeleine Mumcuoglu and manufactured by her Jerusalem-based Razei Bar Industries company, Sambucol has been available for over a decade and can be taken on a regular daily basis.

In a recent laboratory trial, Sambucol was found to be 99% effective in dealing with the Avian Flu virus H5N1.

The research was undertaken by Retroscreen, which is affiliated to the University of London and further tests to prove the effectiveness of Sambucol will be continued.

"To my knowledge, it's the only product that can cut the flu in half, before complications have a chance of setting in. If we do have a cure for chicken flu, this is a really positive thing for Israel," Dr Mumcuoglu said.

Dr Mumcuoglu gained her interest in the power of elderberry as a student.

"I became interested in the natural healing elements of elderberry when I did by PHD on it in Switzerland," she said. "I isolated the active substances from the elderberry and tested them against the flu virus, and found them to be effective. After finishing my studies, I came back to Israel and continued to work on research for another 10 years or so at the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem."

A full range of Sambucol products is available including lozenges, sugar free and a version made for children.
