Ice Hockey

As the world is focused to the Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy, a group of Israeli women are looking forward to taking part in the next one in 2010 by playing Ice Hockey.

While Ice Hockey is not quite big as other international sports in Israel, it is building with players keen to take to the ice.

The Ice Hockey Federation of Israel was established in 1989 as a result of players coming together and wanting to play the sport.

The women's team was started in 2004 and since then has gone from strength to strength.

The players and those of their fans are deeply rooted in the countries they left to get to Israel - the former Soviet Union and Canada.

"Hockey is an amazing game, and today it is no longer a fantasy to have ice hockey in a tropical country," Esther Silver, the head the Women's Team told Israel21c. "I believe that ice hockey is going to become exceedingly popular in Israel. It suits the psyche of the average Israeli - it is a game of chess on ice - manoeuvres, thinking, planning, and skill with an edge of competitiveness," she added.
